School governors are responsible for helping to provide an environment in which a good quality education can be delivered.

They have an important part to play in upholding school standards and shaping the futures of the young people who will form the workforce and community of tomorrow.

The Governing Body has three core functions at Sprowston Community High School, as set out in the 2014 Department for Education’s Governors’ Handbook:

  • Setting the strategic direction
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school
  • Ensuring financial health, probity and value for money

These core functions are consistent with the criteria that Ofsted will use to judge the performance of the Governing Body.

The governing Body reconstituted back in August 2014, and we have the following Committees:

  • Full Governing Body – all Governors attend
  • Student Achievement Committee
  • Resources Committee

Additional committee meetings are held if necessary e.g. Staffing Panel

How to become a Governor

Governors come from a wide range of backgrounds that reflect both the local community and parent voice.  If you are interested in being a Governor, please contact the Chair of Governors via this website to discuss what is involved and what you can offer to the Governing Body. Being a school Governor is rewarding, you need good common sense and an interest in the school and education as a whole – previous experience as a Governor, though welcomed is not necessary!

A document produced by Governor Services ‘The Role of the School Governor in Norfolk’ summarises the role of a school governor.

As Chair of Governors at Sprowston Community High School I am proud of the Governing Body and the input the Governors have to the school, working closely with staff, students and other stakeholders to be a part of the great school we are.

Outcomes for 2017 include 66% English and Maths Grades 4 and above at GCSE, and 66% A*-C at A Level.  We are very proud of our staff and students and wish to thank them for all their hard work over this last academic year.

Governors' Update

This last year has seen significant change for our school.  In February we converted to become an academy with the Right for Success Trust and we are already starting to see the benefits of this.
