On Tuesday September 12th students challenged themselves, overcame their nerves and attended a workshop run by ARTiculation held at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.

ARTiculation workshops have been designed to stimulate students’ interest and understanding of art while developing observation, research, critical analysis, language, presentation and public speaking skills. Led by art experts, students are encouraged to think independently, ask informed questions and analyse information. during the day our students were talking about about works of art, using their interest to help them develop their confidence and ability to present to an audience of people they do not know.

The learning Question: How can you read and investigate Art?; How can you present this to an audience?

The Learning Objective: To work together in teams of eight to make a 5 minute team presentation sharing your opinions and what you have found out about one allocated piece of Art, Design or Architecture

The activities involved analysing and 'reading' four different works of Art and design by famous artists and architects including Henry Moore and Norman Foster. Each team was allocated one of the four to make the focus of their 5 minute group presentation. The students came from three different schools and were organised into teams of eight; each team including students from all three school. This meant that all those involved also had to learn to communicate and work effectively with total strangers.

Preparation for their presentation included:

  • analysing research materials including letters, archive evidence, articles, magazines and books
  • studying and discussing the artworks
  • interviewing one of the curators of the Gallery
  • negotiating what to include in the presentation
  • learning skills to enhance their public speaking ability
  • time management
  • communication, compromise and clarity

they also learned the 6 main 'Ps' of presentation:

  • PREPARATION
  • PROJECTION
  • PACE
  • POSTURE
  • PAUSING
  • PASSION

All 8 students were just brilliant, impressing their teachers and Nell, Becca and Francesca (the education link team at SCVA and the course leader for ARTiculation). Public speaking is always nerve-wracking for the majority of people. I am so impressed by how well everyone rose to the challenge and faced their fears. What a fantastic effort! They spoke with passion, confidence and clarity showing a high level of analysis and communication skills. Today my students taught me a lot of new information about four works of Art and Architecture and the artists who created them. Well done everyone; we enjoyed the day and you should be proud of what you have achieved.
